Stop the Politics at the Awards Show

While the passionate political consciousness of Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon and Gere (“Oscar Officials Slam Presenters’ Political Plugs,” March 31) is indeed anomalous in a town known more for its fashion sense, it is outrageous and arrogant of producer Gil Cates to call their actions “outrageous” and “arrogant.”
As an HIV-positive actor who works in Hollywood, I wholeheartedly applaud Robbins and Sarandon, who pointed out that the HIV-positive Haitians being held in Cuba have not committed a crime. Robbins and Sarandon know the difference between merely wearing a red ribbon and embracing what the ribbon really means.
And to answer Cates’ question, “Does anyone care about Richard Gere’s comments about China?” Yes, anyone with a heart.
