BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : Mesa, Morris Suspended for Brawl

Associated Press

Cleveland Indian pitcher Jose Mesa and Cincinnati Red first baseman Hal Morris were each suspended for three games and fined undisclosed amounts Friday for their parts in a fight during an exhibition game this week.

It is the first time in eight years that penalties imposed in spring training have carried over into the regular season. Lonnie Smith, with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985, was suspended for three days after using abusive language to an umpire during an exhibition.

Mesa plans to appeal his suspension, which means the penalty will not take effect until after a hearing.

Morris, who separated his left shoulder in the fight and is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks, will begin his suspension the second game after returning from the disabled list.

Reliever Alejandro Pena, who is not expected to pitch this season, took a $500,000 cut in guaranteed pay under his new contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pena agreed on Dec. 10 to a one-year contract worth $1.35 million, then discovered when he arrived at spring training that he needed elbow surgery.

Under the new deal, Pena gets $675,000 this season and a $175,000 base salary in 1994.

The Texas Rangers’ Nolan Ryan made a celebrated return to the Houston Astrodome to pitch his final exhibition game against his former teammates, but the Astros roughed up the future Hall of Famer for four runs and 10 hits in his six innings. Ryan was the losing pitcher as the Astros took a 4-0 lead and held on for a 4-3 victory. . . . Frank Viola and Corey Bailey combined for a no-hitter, leading the Boston Red Sox over the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-0. Viola struck out six and walked one in seven innings. . . . Dave Stewart had a rocky final spring outing for the Toronto Blue Jays, giving up nine runs and 11 hits in four innings against St. Louis. . . . The Baltimore Orioles’ Mike Mussina was sharp, throwing six scoreless innings against Pittsburgh to lower his earned-run average to 1.67 over 27 innings. . . . The Milwaukee Brewers obtained right-handed Jamie McAndrew from the Florida Marlins for minor league pitcher Tom McGraw.
