Not only in the United States will the concierge serve as your link to medical care, as “For Minor Medical Problems, Dial Front Desk” (March 14) remarks. In Nice, my travel mate, a coronary-bypass veteran, clearly needed 5 a.m. medical attention. We asked at the front desk for directions to the local hospital. The youthful and sleepy attendant assured us an M.D. would come to the hotel promptly. He did.
Multilingual, his two-way pager clipped to his belt, the doctor took a history, examined the patient carefully, sat reassuringly until the medication took effect, gave advice, wrote his prescription, took a call for his next case and whipped the insurance forms from his medical bag. Payment was on the spot, reimbursed at home without a quibble on forms that needed translation from French.
