A Ventura man was killed on the Santa Paula Freeway after he passed another vehicle and lost control of his pickup truck, officials said Monday.
George Medrano, 38, was eastbound on the highway just east of Edwards Ranch Road about 4:25 p.m. Sunday when witnesses said he veered onto the shoulder, passed a vehicle ahead of him and then lost control of the truck, skidding into the center divider and overturning, a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol said.
Medrano was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m. in the emergency room at Ventura County Medical Center, said Craig Stevens, Ventura County deputy coroner.
Stevens said a hospital blood test indicated that Medrano, who died of multiple blunt injuries, may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. The results of further toxicological tests were pending, Stevens said.
