SIMI VALLEY : $1-Million Housing Grant Given to City

State officials have awarded a $1-million grant to Simi Valley for programs that help preserve and provide housing for residents with low or moderate incomes.
Simi Valley was one of 44 communities statewide and the only one in Ventura County to receive funds under the National Affordable Housing Act of 1990, said Paul Kranhold, assistant director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development.
Simi Valley has earmarked its grant for three local housing programs, said Diane Davis-Crompton, the city’s director of environmental services.
The city’s home rehabilitation program, which provides loans to low-income residents for critical housing repairs, will receive $310,500. Simi Valley’s rent-subsidy program for senior citizens will receive $209,250.
The city plans to use the remaining $480,250 to buy land for a proposed 22-unit condominium complex, officials said.
The grant will help reduce the cost of each unit. The condominiums will be reserved for buyers who meet low- or moderate-income guidelines.
