SOUTHEAST AREA — Eric Wright and Michele Gonzalez of South Gate High have been selected to The Times’ 1993 Central City High School All-Star Basketball Teams.
Miguel Villegas of the Rams boys’ team and Ruby Maciel and Letty Madrigal of the Rams girls’ team earned second-team berths.
The teams were picked predominantly on the basis of ballots turned in by area coaches.
Wright, a 6-3 senior forward, was one of the City’s top outside shooters, averaging 21 points and eight rebounds. He made the City 3-A team as a sophomore and the 4-A team as a senior after missing his junior season with an ankle injury. He plans to continue his career at Harbor College.
Gonzalez, a 5-9 senior forward, was named most valuable player of the Garfield and Los Angeles Invitational tournaments and helped South Gate (19-5) win a school-record 15 consecutive games. A two-time All-City 4-A first team selection, she averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Villegas, a 6-1 senior guard, averaged 18 points a game. He was a Times all-Southeast choice last year.
Maciel, a 5-8 freshman forward, averaged 13.2 points, and Madrigal, a 5-5 senior guard/forward, averaged 12.3 points.
The players will receive their awards at a breakfast Sunday at the University Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
