Teachers Assn. Votes to Oppose Bergeson

From a Times Staff Writer

Delivering a blow to state Sen. Marian Bergeson’s effort to become state schools chief, the powerful California Teachers Assn. dropped an earlier vow of neutrality Thursday and agreed to oppose her nomination.

The executive board voted last month to take no position on Bergeson, but the governing body voted 17-4 on Thursday to oppose her after interviewing the Newport Beach Republican on the issues, sources said.

In particular, the board was troubled by Bergeson’s support last year of funding cuts for education. “To us, that was major,” union President Del Weber said.
