AIDS and the Theater
Just what is the “moral urgency” with which AIDS has imbued the American theater? That we understand how devastating the disease is, especially to the gay community?
Agreed. But that moral urgency also needs to be aimed at those foolish enough to engage in irresponsible sexual practices in an age in which “safe sex” is a myth. Each of us--whether a part of the gay community or not--must assume responsibility for what we do with our bodies. The spread of AIDS could be nearly halted on the West Coast by a commitment to celibacy.
How about a play urging that kind of moral responsibility? It may not make great drama, but it could save lives.
