Associated Press

The United States soccer team lost to Colombia, 2-1, in an exhibition at the Orange Bowl on Saturday night.

But the loss didn’t spoil the day for U.S. midfielder Alexi Lalas, who was making a rare start and contributed his first goal in a full international game.

Lalas’ goal, which gave the Americans a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, came on a header off a corner kick by Chris Henderson.

Colombia tied the game in the 38th minute when Adolfo Valencia beat sweeper Desmond Armstrong and scored on a 17-yard shot past goalie Tony Meola.

Alexis Garcia scored the decisive goal for Colombia on a 10-yard shot in the 68th minute.

Goalie Oscar Cordoba stopped three shots in the second half for Colombia, which has lost only once in nine meetings against the United States dating to 1961.

The game before 17,652 was the fourth in the 12-game World Series of Soccer, a prelude to the 1994 World Cup. The United States plays Peru on Wednesday night in Mission Viejo.
