Dogged Clinton Loses in Bidding for Pricey Pup

WASHINGTON — President Clinton came up empty-handed in a high-stakes auction of a puppy, but his daughter, Chelsea, may get a dog anyway.
Attending a fund-raiser for Chelsea’s school, Sidwell Friends, on Saturday, Clinton got in a bidding war for a golden retriever. He dropped out at $3,500, and the dog sold for $3,700.
White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers said Monday that the Clintons owned a dog in Arkansas, but it got hit by a car and died several years ago. “It’s possible that Chelsea could be ready for a new dog,” said Myers. Chelsea, 13, already has a cat, Socks.
Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton attended the auction. Chelsea appeared to be sitting on her father’s lap during the bidding.
