NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Three-Hitter Lifts Saberhagen, Mets

Bret Saberhagen pitched a three-hitter at New York to end a personal three-game losing streak and lead the New York Mets to a 1-0 victory over the Florida Marlins, only the Mets’ third victory in 14 games.

The Mets were held to three hits by Ryan Bowen (2-4) and scored on Eddie Murray’s one-out sacrifice fly during the first inning.

Saberhagen (3-3), whose other two victories have been against the expansion Colorado Rockies, struck out eight and walked one.

Colorado 7, San Francisco 4--Dante Bichette hit a three-run homer and pitcher Armando Reynoso added a two-run shot at Denver as the Rockies ended a five-game losing streak.

The Rockies, who had lost six in a row at home, scored three runs against Trevor Wilson (0-3) during the first inning. Joe Girardi walked, Jerald Clark was hit by a pitch and Bichette hit his fourth homer.

Reynoso put the Rockies ahead, 5-1, with his first major league hit. Reynoso (2-1) gave up 13 hits, struck out seven and walked two.

Philadelphia 5, Pittsburgh 1--Darren Daulton’s grand slam during the seventh inning--the second grand slam in as many games for the Phillies--lifted them past the Pirates at Philadelphia.

Sunday, Mariano Duncan hit a grand slam during the eighth inning for a victory over St. Louis.

Danny Jackson (3-1) gave up a second-inning run, then shut out the Pirates the rest of the way.

Daulton hit his grand slam against Bob Walk (3-3).

Cincinnati 6, San Diego 5--Tom Browning got his third victory in a row, and Barry Larkin and Kevin Mitchell drove in two runs apiece at Cincinnati to lead the Reds.

Browning (3-2) gave up 10 hits and two walks over six innings, but yielded only three runs.

Cincinnati scored five runs against Kerry Taylor (0-2).

Houston 5, Atlanta 2--Ken Caminiti’s two-run double keyed a four-run eighth inning as the Astros ending the Braves’ 14-game Astrodome winning streak.

Greg Maddux held the Astros to two hits over seven innings, but was replaced in the eighth by Jay Howell (1-2).

With two out, Casey Candaele, batting .091, doubled to right field. Jeff Bagwell was intentionally walked by Howell and Mike Stanton walked Eric Anthony before Caminiti’s two-run double.

Xavier Hernandez (2-0) pitched two innings for the victory.
