ROME — An explosion devastated a residential street in a wealthy Rome neighborhood Friday night and hurt at least 18 people. Police said it appeared to be a car bomb and that a TV talk show host may have been the target.
The blast set off a major fire in a six-story building and broke windows for blocks around. No one was killed.
Close to the blast center is a theater where former journalist Maurizio Costanzo records his TV program. He emerged unhurt.
Costanzo told state TV that his show had received threats but none recently. His programs tackle leading issues, including the Mafia, with guests who appear before an audience.
