* I wish to thank The Times for recognizing the hard efforts of the students at Marian Bergeson Elementary School in “Pennies and Heaven” (Newswatch, May 8). I am very proud that we were able to raise $700 to preserve and protect 20 acres of Brazilian rain forest in the Rio Bravo Reserve. However, the purpose of the drive was not to take a field trip--which might be implied from the closing quote. It is my desire to teach children, beginning in kindergarten, that they can make a difference in this world.
Pennies count! They can use their pennies as one small way of becoming a caretaker of our precious home, planet Earth. My kindergartners will go on to first grade knowing we all must be responsible citizens--even if you’re only 6 years old!
