Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Clinton Will Make Memorial Day Visits

President Clinton will visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, despite threatened protests from veterans unhappy with his anti-war past. The appearances, which had prompted a post-card campaign from some disgruntled veterans, will underscore the President’s determination to mend long-strained relations with the military. George Stephanopoulos, the President’s communications director, said that Clinton “believes it is important to pay his respects.” The major veterans groups are either neutral on the issue or endorse Clinton’s appearance.
