Katherine Smith, a junior at Garden Grove High School, has been named student representative to the Garden Grove School District Board of Education for the 1993-94 school year.
On Wednesday, Smith, 17, of Garden Grove was chosen by student leaders from the district’s seven high schools. She will serve as a non-voting member with the board’s five elected trustees.
Her other responsibilities will be to preside over monthly meetings of a student advisory committee to the board and serve as a liaison for the district’s 41,000 students. “I’ll be more or less a mediator for the students, a voice the students can use,” she said.
The trustee-elect is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as her campus’s community service director. Smith, who was chosen from a field of eight applicants, said: “I’m kind of proud. I really didn’t think I would ever accomplish something like this.”
