California Routs Temple With Scoring Flurry, 58-0

PHILADELPHIA — California scored four touchdowns in a span of 4:38 of the first quarter and the No. 21 Bears went on to rout Temple, 58-0, in a nonconference game Saturday.

California (3-0) dominated every phase of the game. The Bears rolled up 430 yards, including 306 in the first half, and held Temple to 99. Temple (1-1) crossed midfield only three times.

California quarterback Dave Barr completed six of 10 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown before being relieved by Kerry McGonigal with 10:05 left in the third quarter and California holding a 52-0 lead.

Reserve running backs Reynard Rutherford and Tyrone Edwards each ran for a pair of touchdowns. Rutherford led all rushers with 64 yards in 12 carries.

California scored its first touchdown on a 20-yard run by Lindsey Chapman with 7:05 left in the first quarter. Two minutes later, Matt Clizbe returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown.

California increased its lead to 28-0 when Ricky Spears returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Spears intercepted another pass to set up a third quarter touchdown before being forced to leave the game because of a broken left wrist.
