Canyon High School Football Coach Tells Team He Plans to Stick With It

Harry Welch, football coach at Canyon High School, met with his team Monday and announced that he has decided not to quit.
“I told the players I will give them everything I have and I will be out there for them,” said Welch, in his 12th season at Canyon. “I will only remove myself from this job when I can no longer give the way I need to. Right now, I don’t know when that will be.”
After Canyon’s 14-13 nonleague loss Friday to Alemany, Welch told his team that he was considering stepping down at the end of the season. He said he would announce his plans Monday.
Canyon is 3-2 entering its Foothill League opener Friday against Burbank. Welch, 48, said he is going through one of his toughest periods as Canyon’s coach. After the Cowboys’ loss to Quartz Hill on Oct. 1, Welch said he was assaulted by a booster club member and filed a police report. No action has yet been taken.
