LOS ANGELES : City Council Asks Study of New Immigration Laws
- Share via
Concerned about discrimination against immigrants, the Los Angeles City Council on Friday called on the city attorney’s office and chief legislative analyst to study the impact of a series of new state immigration laws.
Gov. Pete Wilson recently signed several bills designed to stem the flow of illegal immigration. They would prohibit driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, require proof of legal residency for state-funded job training programs, and prohibit local governments from adopting laws protecting undocumented residents.
“It is important the City Council understands the potential ramifications of the governor’s actions and the potential for discrimination because of non-citizenship,” said Councilman Mike Hernandez, whose request for the study won unanimous support from council members.
