FRIDAY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Fremont Squeaks by Jefferson, 14-13

Fremont quarterback William Yates threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to receiver Andre Johnson with 9:39 left and hit Johnson again for the two-point conversion in the Pathfinders’ 14-13 come-from-behind win over Jefferson.

Quarterback Anthony Martin scored on a 30-yard run to give the Democrats the lead in the second quarter of the Southeastern Conference game at Fremont. Martin pushed the Democrats out front, 13-0, on a two-yard run with 4:45 in the third quarter, four plays after Fremont was penalized for roughing the kicker.

Fremont tailback Dalonte Walker scored on a 12-yard run four plays after the Pathfinders recovered a Jefferson fumble on a punt return to bring the Pathfinders within seven, 13-6. Yates connected on five of 13 pass attempts for 152 yards and one touchdown, and Johnson caught three passes for 97 yards and a touchdown to lead Fremont.

Jefferson fullback Thurman Spencer ran for 43 yards in nine carries and tailback Isaac Hatley rushed for 40 yards in 10 carries to lead the Democrats.

Crenshaw 11, Dorsey 6--A 35-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter by junior running back Brandon Seals gave the Cougars an upset victory over visiting Dorsey in a Southern Pacific Conference game.

Seals had 65 yards in 11 carries and junior Farrel Payton, his backfield mate, had 71 yards in 14 carries to lead the Cougar attack.

Bell Gardens 21, Alhambra 17--Without the services of senior running back Junior Samano, Bell Gardens relied on its defense and the running of senior Mike Flores to overcome a halftime deficit and beat Alhambra.

Samano, the area’s leading rusher, was suspended Friday for his involvement in a school fight, but Flores picked up the slack, rushing for 145 yards in 28 carries and two third-quarter touchdowns.

Records: Bell Gardens 4-1-1; Alhambra 2-4

Hamilton 29, Los Angeles 12--The Romans could not take advantage of two second-half turnovers or penalties totaling 75 yards against the Yankees, coming up short in a Coastal Conference game.

The Romans scored on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Patrick Regan to running back David Bell with 45 seconds left to close the gap to 21-12, but missed a two-point attempt and failed to recover the ensuing onside kick.

Records: Hamilton 3-3; Los Angeles 1-5

Bell 34, Brawley 7--Eagle tailback Vern Benard, a sophomore in his first start, carried 21 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bell to a nonconference victory.

Benard’s first touchdown came on a 65-yard run on Bell’s second play from scrimmage.

Eagle quarterback Danny Morales completed nine of 19 passes for 163 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Marshall 7, Lincoln 6--Marshall linebacker Miguel Iglesias blocked a 20-yard field goal attempt by Hiran Andrade with 28 seconds left to give the Barristers a win in a Northern Conference game at Marshall.

Lincoln had the ball at their 45 with 1:49 to play. Quarterback Gerardo Roman kept the drive alive by completing two passes to running back Joe Del Toro for 22 yards that put the Tigers on the Barristers’ 12 with 48 seconds left.

Fullback Oscar Mendoza carried the ball to the 3 with time running out. Lincoln used their last time-out to set up a possible game winning field goal but Marshall ran out the clock after recovering the block.

Garfield 26, Jordan 0--Tailback Armando Figueroa rushed for 260 yards in 30 carries and a touchdown to propel Garfield to its fourth consecutive victory in a Southeastern Conference game at Jordan.

Garfield picked off six Jordan passes, including two interceptions by linebacker Manuel Rodriguez. Fullback Carlos Alvarado rushed for two touchdowns and Braulio De La Torre scored on a 21-yard run for Garfield.

Records: Garfield 5-1; Jordan 0-6.

Roosevelt 13, South Gate 10--With seven seconds left, Augustine Lopez kicked a 32-yard field goal to give the Roughriders a victory in a Southeastern Conference game.

Lopez also kicked a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter and Roosevelt got a fourth-quarter touchdown from senior running back Juan Rodriguez, who scored from two yards out. Rodriguez rushed for 30 yards in 10 carries.

South Gate was led by running back Roylando Jeffery, who had 88 yards in 20 carries.

Records: Roosevelt 5-0-1; South Gate 1-4

Locke 20, Huntington Park 8--Junior running back Sirr Parker carried the ball 14 times for 105 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Saints over the Spartans.

The Saints’ first score came when Parker caught a lateral pitch from quarterback Akili Roberson, then ran untouched down the right sideline for a 46-yard touchdown. He scored a second touchdown just before the end of the first half on a one-yard rush.

The third score came on a 62-yard run by senior running back Jevron Lucas. Senior running back Ricardo Bogarin led the Spartan offensive with 81 yards in 14 carries. Quarterback Deon Mayes’ 10-yard pass to Manuel Palache inside the end zone gave Huntington Park its only touchdown.

Wilson 28, Verdugo Hills 20--Quarterback Eddie Gonzalez threw three touchdown passes, including two to Buster Bradley, as the Mules won a Northern Conference game at home.

Verdugo Hills was driving in the fourth quarter, but quarterback David Bryant was intercepted by Rudy Rodriguez at the Wilson 44 to stop the drive. The Mules scored eight plays later to secure the win when Gonzalez connected with Bradley for a 40-yard touchdown.

Records: Verdugo Hills 1-5; Wilson 2-4.

Belmont 35, Hollywood 0--Senior defensive back Octavio Calvillo returned punts of 67 and 66 yards for touchdowns as the unbeaten Sentinels defeated host Hollywood in a Northern Conference game.

Sentinel senior running back Roman Archie gained 53 yards on nine carries and rushed twice for touchdowns. Belmont quarterback senior Dale Saulque completed four of seven passes for 133 yards and one touchdown, a 40-yard strike to Archie in the second quarter.

Records: Belmont 6-0; Hollywood 0-6
