Norwalk : Water Rate Hike for System Serving 3,336 Accounts OKd

Water bills for some residents and businesses will rise in November because of a rate hike approved recently by the City Council.
Residential customers of the Norwalk Municipal Water System will see their bills go up $6 to $8 a month. Businesses will see an average monthly increase of $46.50 in their water costs and an additional $1.58 to $10.84 increase in meter rates.
City officials said they had to raise the rates because operating costs are increasing. One of the water system’s wells failed this year, they said, meaning it will pay about $85,000 more per year to buy water from suppliers. They added that rising pumping fees and water rates from the system’s other suppliers also are going up.
“I don’t see any other alternative,” Councilman Robert J. Arthur said.
Norwalk Municipal serves 14% of the city’s water customers, or 3,336 accounts, and is one of six water systems in the city.
