GARDEN GROVE — Kevin Allen rushed for 190 yards in 15 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Rancho Alamitos to a 49-24 victory over Bolsa Grande Thursday night at Bolsa Grande High School.
Rancho Alamitos’ offensive line had a huge size advantage over Bolsa Grande’s defensive front, and the Vaqueros exploited it early and often, rolling up 352 rushing yards for the game. Moukda Choulamany rushed for 107 first-half yards in 11 carries, then sat out the second half with a thigh bruise.
“Our kids came off the field saying they could handle them up front,” Rancho Alamitos Coach Doug Case said. “It was a step forward for us.”
Vaqueros quarterback John Frank completed only four of nine passes, but three were for touchdowns. The last one, a 33-yarder to Jeff Turbarg, gave Rancho Alamitos (4-2-1, 3-1 in league) a 42-6 third-quarter lead.
But sloppy play by Rancho Alamitos’ second-string almost let Bolsa Grande (3-4, 2-2) back in the game. The Vaqueros lost three fumbles in the fourth quarter, and Bolsa Grande quarterback Brian Baughman took advantage. He threw touchdown passes of 23 and 17 yards to Love Jefferson, and running back Hae Sung added an eight-yard scoring run to make it 42-24.
After the third Vaquero fumble, recovered by Sung on the Rancho Alamitos 21 with 6 minutes 48 seconds left in the game, Baughman had a chance to draw Bolsa Grande closer. But sacks by Adam Maldonado and Justin Volkmann ended the Matadors’ last threat. Baughman was sacked six times for losses of 39 yards.
