Amdahl Posts Third-Quarter Loss: Stung by shrinking sales of mainframe computers and a bitter price war, Amdahl Corp. reported a loss of nearly $276 million, most of it relating to a corporate overhaul that will include an 1,800-person reduction in its 7,300-person work force. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company’s loss, on $393.7 million in sales, compares to a loss of $30.8 million on sales of $588.8 million in the same quarter last year.
