ORANGE LEAGUE : Brea-Olinda Scores Early, Tops Anaheim

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Brea-Olinda capitalized on big plays early and a stingy second-half defense to defeat Anaheim, 28-14, Friday night in an Orange League game at Brea-Olinda High.

The Wildcats came into the game having been shut out in their first two league games, scored quickly when Casey King ran the second play of the game 64 yards to the Anaheim one-yard line. Scot Hester dived over on the next play to give Brea (3-5, 1-2) a 7-0 lead.

Bob Bryant’s 15-yard punt return put Brea at Anaheim’s 41 and Paul Chiotti connected with Chris Beamer on a 43-yard pass on third and 18 to put the Wildcats inside the five. Two plays later, King scored from a yard out to give Brea a 14-0 lead with 6:41 left in the first quarter.

Anaheim (4-4, 1-2) followed with a 14-play drive that ended with Reuben Droughns’ six-yard touchdown run cutting Brea’s lead to seven, 14-7.

Droughns tied the score on Anaheim’s next drive when he broke several tackles during a 42-yard touchdown run with 5:17 left in the first half.

After stopping Anaheim on fourth down, the Wildcats put together a 10-play, 58-yard drive and grabbed the lead on an eight-yard touchdown reception by Darin Nicholson from Paul Chiotti. The drive was helped by a face-mask penalty on Anaheim and a critical fourth-down conversion by Brea.
