Ending the Pain

The circumstances of Carla Silverman’s suicide point out the need for laws to avoid such tragic situations. Competent adults should be allowed to say “enough” when faced with painful terminal illness, and to have medical assistance in carrying out their voluntary wish without fear of their loved ones being arrested.

I knew Carla only by phone. She counseled me on how to help an abandoned cat. She was so patient and friendly, and I was so grateful. I admire the way she was master of her own fate.

I resent sanctimonious individuals who would tell me I have to suffer to die. Doctors say adequate pain management is available, but my two friends who died in the last two years suffered, asking if it couldn’t be ended now.
