OUTLOOK
Pierce has been at Sunny Hills only since Oct. 4 and has coached the team for only a week. “With a new coach and a new system, we’re pretty much starting from scratch,” said Pierce, who replaced Steve White, the Lancers’ coach for the previous 17 seasons. Pierce spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Southern California College. “I already told the team that we will be the best defensive team in the league,” Pierce said. He will implement many of the strategies SCC Coach Bill Reynolds employs. Pierce’s system will be a 180-degree change from White’s zone defense tactics. “At SCC, we were always undermanned, so we used a lot of full-court pressure defenses, played man-to-man, and tried to create high-scoring games,” Pierce said. Garand is the team’s best returning shooter, and Soohoo should start in the backcourt. Pierce said Nicolas, a transfer from Northern California, and Granillo, who played with the junior varsity as a freshman last season, could also make an impact immediately.
