GARDEN GROVE : Holiday Celebration at Homeless Shelter

The Thomas House, a temporary shelter for homeless families, is holding a Fiesta de Navidad--Christmas party--for children today from 10 a.m. to noon at 12601 Morningside Drive.
There will be refreshments, Christmas carols and a petting zoo. Police officers will display their department’s mobile command unit.
Sister Kathy Stein, program director of the nondenominational, nonprofit Thomas House, said she expects about 150 youngsters from past or present shelter families to attend.
Since 1987, the Thomas House has provided shelter for up to three months to homeless families. Currently, nine families are staying in apartments provided by the organization.
The program offers classes in parenting, nutrition, tutoring, budgeting, English and vocational training. Families are required to save 80% of their income during their stay so they can find housing of their own.
The organization depends mostly on individual donations, Stein said. Church support and corporate and city grants are other revenue sources.
“The situation seems to be getting worse, and more and more of the homeless are women and children,” Stein said.
