Aviation: Concern About Citizen Risks

Another pilot out of Santa Monica Airport loses control of his aircraft, another person dead, another Westside home heavily damaged (Metro, March 12).
Private aviation at Santa Monica Airport may be likened to smoking--it is legal, it is supported by the government and it is enjoyable to those who participate in it. It is also dangerous to those who live nearby and must suffer the consequences of the noise, the pollution, and the increasingly frequent crashes.
Please don’t trot out that tired refrain, “the airport was there before the homes.” (Westside, Feb. 17) When I bought my home in 1972, jets were not allowed. Now jets and the fuel for them are welcome at the airport.
Touch-and-go exercises, student pilots, home-built aircraft and private aviation exacerbate the environment and obviously need tighter regulation if they are to continue to operate with no place to make emergency landings but in Westside neighborhoods.
