Interactive: Former Silicon Graphics Inc. technology wizard Carol Peters and Hollywood producer Jeff Apple (“In the Line of Fire”) have formed a new media company to develop interactive television programming for children. Dubbed daVinci Time & Space, the company’s goal is to create an interactive environment for kids that could contain dozens of games, educational experiences, linear movies or TV shows, and advertising from a variety of sources--a kind of electronic Disneyland. At a time when most interactive media start-ups are focusing on CD-ROMs or on-line services, where a market already exists, daVinci managed to raise nearly $5 million from venture capitalists to concentrate solely on the less tangible goal of next-generation interactive television. Peters, who developed Silicon Graphics’ popular Indigo computer, directs daVinci’s engineering efforts from an office in San Mateo. Apple oversees the creative end from Los Angeles. The two keep in touch via (what else?) video conferencing over high-speed phone lines.
