Women Firefighters

* Hayden D. Hamilton’s letter (April 10), in reference to the “wall” test for police candidates, also included a tongue-in-cheek comment about women firefighters.
As a battalion chief of the Los Angeles City Fire Department, and a supporter of the women firefighters, I take issue with his remarks. His comment, “We now have female firefighters who can’t push a ladder up to a burning building,” does not apply to the women of the L.A. City Fire Department. Those women all passed one of the severest tests of strength and willpower when they passed through the drill tower. They then were evaluated for 12 months by officers in the fire stations.
Women firefighters have worked diligently and with courage to gain the respected position of firefighter, and should not be castigated by lighthearted comments.
JOHN J. ADAMS, Battalion Chief
Los Angeles City Fire Department
