A 40-year-old Pico Rivera man was killed Monday when his tractor-trailer struck a center divider on the Orange Freeway, then veered back across the road and crashed into a sound wall, authorities said.
The driver, identified as Angel Miguel Martin, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the left front tire of Martin’s truck blew, causing him to lose control.
“It appears that he was killed, or at least knocked unconscious, (by) the first impact,” said CHP Officer Angel Johnson, “and the truck drifted across the road.”
The crash took place in the freeway’s southbound lanes at Orangethorpe Road at 11:30 a.m.
A small diesel spill from the big rig’s fuel tanks slowed southbound traffic for several hours, Johnson said.
