U.N. Bid for Cyprus Solution Collapses

NICOSIA, Cyprus — Months of U.N.-led diplomacy aimed at persuading Greek and Turkish Cypriots to agree on confidence-building measures collapsed Thursday.
After separate meetings in Nicosia with Greek Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart, Rauf Denktash, U.N. envoy Joe Clark said that he had failed to bridge their differences and saw no point in further talks.
Clark, a former Canadian foreign minister, said his next move would be to report the outcome of his mission to U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
