Esa Sallinen
SCHOOL: Burroughs
SPORT: Track and field
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: The Finnish exchange student is undefeated in outdoor competition and has cleared 16 feet or higher in four straight meets. He capped that streak with a personal best of 16 feet 4 3/4 inches in last Wednesday’s Foothill League finals.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Sallinen moved to fourth on the all-time region list--and to second on the yearly state list--with his personal best vault, yet Burroughs assistant Mike McHorney said he is capable of jumping substantially higher. “His technique in bending the pole is really starting to improve,” McHorney said. “If he can keep that going until the state championships, he’s got a chance to clear 17 feet.”
