PALO ALTO — An apparent end-of-the-year prank resulted in an explosion in a high school drinking fountain that injured 18 students and led to the arrest of three others on felony charges, officials said.
The explosion at Gunn High School about 10 a.m. Wednesday “shot flames in all directions” and set fire to some students’ backpacks and clothing, school district spokesman Irv Rollins said.
Police arrested Robby Llewellyn Roberts, 18; Brendan Patrick Wheatley, 18; and David Chin, 18, officials said.
Most of the injuries at the school of 1,200 students were minor, but two students were taken to Valley Medical Center.
