Univision’s telecast of Mexico’s 1-1 tie with Italy on Tuesday outdrew ESPN’s coverage nearly four to one in Los Angeles, according to Nielsen ratings released Wednesday.
Univision’s coverage, carried by Channel 34, got a rating of 5.5 in all television households in Los Angeles and was seen in about 275,000. ESPN got a 1.6 and was seen in an estimated 80,000 homes.
In Hispanic homes, Univision got a 35.2 L.A. rating.
Nationally, Mexico-Italy on Univision got a 15.1 rating in Hispanic homes and was seen in 984,520 of the approximately 6 million Hispanic homes the Spanish-language network serves. The game on ESPN got a national rating of 1.4 and reached 883,400 of ESPN’s 63 million homes.
ESPN is averaging a 2.1 national rating after 18 live telecasts and a 1.7 for all 27, which includes nine delayed telecasts.
The 2.1 rating means the games, on an average, are being watched in 2.1% of ESPN’s 63 million homes, or in about 1.3 million homes.
