Probe Sought on Coffee Price Hikes: The New York State Consumer Protection Board has asked the Justice Department to investigate the recent retail hikes amid steep jumps in futures prices for coffee that will not reach consumers for months. The agency said in a statement that the increases in consumer prices are unwarranted because the currently surging price of raw coffee should be reflected later, not now. Prices for green, unroasted coffee beans soared to eight-year highs recently, topping $2 a pound, after frosts in Brazil’s coffee-growing regions damaged vast amounts of next year’s crop.
