Governor of Illinois Has Heart Surgery

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Gov. Jim Edgar underwent emergency quadruple-bypass surgery, and doctors said Friday that he should be able to return to normal activities in a few weeks.
Edgar, a 47-year-old Republican, had been experiencing chest pain for some time when he went to Good Samaritan Hospital on Thursday for a previously scheduled appointment, a spokesman said. Edgar was in pain when he arrived and, after a test, doctors recommended immediate surgery.
