FDA Orders Recall of Goat Milk Cheese That May Be Tainted With Bacteria
- Share via
WASHINGTON — A Northern California company is recalling thousands of packages of goat milk cheese because they may contain life-threatening bacteria.
Anyone who purchased Cypress Grove Chevre between early May and June 22 is asked not to eat the cheese, but to return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
The cheese from a processing plant at McKinleyville, Calif., near Eureka, was sold primarily in California, but possibly contaminated shipments also went to Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon and Texas.
The Food and Drug Administration discovered that some of the cheese was not pasteurized long enough, so it could be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria that usually causes flu symptoms in healthy people, but can be deadly to the very young, elderly, people with weak immune systems and fetuses. Recall questions should be directed to Cypress Grove at (707) 839-3168.
