Laguna Walks--Sierra Sage, a relatively new sub-chapter of the Sierra Club, holds twice-weekly conditioning hikes in Laguna Beach, sometimes on the streets and sometimes on fire roads in the nearby hills. Sunday walks at 8 a.m. are held year-round; Wednesday walks at 6:30 p.m. will be held until daylight saving time ends in fall.
The main purpose of the walks is to maintain cardiovascular conditioning for other club events held throughout the year, such as a six-mile hike up Mt. Stoddard (near Mt. Baldy) planned for Aug. 13.
“There are lots of hills in Laguna Beach,” said David Perlman, vice chairman of the club. “We always try to get at least 600 feet of elevation gain.” Groups for the twice-weekly walks usually are less than 10, and serve as a good introduction to the club, Perlman said.
The walk routes vary, but meet always at the parking structure at the intersection of Glenneyre and Park streets in Laguna Beach.
Other club events range from an Aug. 14 champagne brunch and hike to a five-day boat trip through the Channel Islands in September. Information: (714) 494-3268.
Bugged?--Parents too squeamish to teach their kids about the insect world can leave that job to the Children’s Museum of La Habra. “What’s Bugging You?” is a hands-on display on view through Sept. 11, and dedicated to creepy, crawly things.
Another permanent exhibit at the museum focuses on paleontology and allows youngsters to search for dinosaur bones in a simulated dig. The museum, at 301 S. Euclid St. in La Habra, is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission is $4, with children under 2 free. Information: (310) 905-9793.
