LAS VEGAS — John Wayne Bobbitt was convicted Wednesday of misdemeanor domestic battery against his former fiancee by a judge who said Bobbitt has an “attitude problem.”
Justice of the Peace William Jansen sentenced Bobbitt to 60 days in jail, then suspended 45 days of the sentence. Bobbitt was led from the courtroom in handcuffs to begin serving his sentence immediately.
Bobbitt also was sentenced to six months probation and ordered to attend impulse control and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
“I firmly believe you have an attitude problem,” Jansen told Bobbitt. “Your attitude problem is caused by your drinking.”
Bobbitt, 27, was charged with striking Kristina Elliott, 21, a former exotic dancer he met while in Las Vegas on a publicity tour.
He faces another trial Sept. 26 on a second domestic battery charge involving Elliott. In that case, prosecutors say, he slammed Elliott against a wall during an argument May 6.
Bobbitt became famous in June, 1993, when his wife, Lorena, sliced off his penis while he slept in their Virginia home. She said she did it because Bobbitt had sexually assaulted her.
Bobbitt’s penis was reattached surgically and he was acquitted of marital sexual abuse in November. A jury in January found Lorena Bobbitt innocent by reason of insanity of mutilating her husband. The couple’s divorce is pending.
On Wednesday, Bobbitt appealed for leniency, saying all the facts did not come out at the two-day trial.
