Turnovers Help Marina Defeat Corona del Mar

WESTMINSTER — Mike Williams ran for 90 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown to lead Marina over Corona del Mar, 22-14, Thursday night at Westminster High School.
Marina linebacker Steve Cooper recovered a fumbled snap by Corona del Mar quarterback Josh Walz to seal the victory with 18 seconds left.
Aron Bergman intercepted a pass from Sea King quarterback Aaron Perlmutter on the first play from scrimmage, and the Vikings scored three plays later, on a 10-yard run by quarterback Matt Roberson.
Corona del Mar pulled within one midway through the second quarter when running back Brian Hogan capped a 42-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The kick failed, leaving Marina with a 7-6 advantage at the half.
Marina pulled away in a second half marred with turnovers. The Vikings’ Tom Keim returned a punt that went 20 yards off the back of Walz for a 14-6 lead.
After recovering an on-side kick, Williams finished a six-play, 34-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion gave Marina a 22-6 lead.
The Sea Kings pulled within seven when Perlmutter hit Bill Taketa for a 42-yard touchdown, then ran in the two-point conversion.
Corona del Mar had a chance to tie with under a minute left, when Walz fumbled the snap at midfield.
