Massachusetts may have gotten a reprieve.
The Minutemen, who struggled to an overtime victory at West Virginia and seemed ripe for a fall from their No. 1 spot in the Associated Press’ college basketball poll, instead maintained it when Connecticut lost its first game and UCLA lost to Cal on Saturday.
UMass (15-1) received 53 first-place votes, 43 more than North Carolina, which moved to second place in the poll.
Kansas jumped to third, followed by UConn, Maryland and Kentucky. UCLA dropped from fourth to seventh.
Connecticut remained a unanimous No. 1 in the women’s poll after a 97-87 victory over Kansas. The UConn women (17-0) are the only unbeaten basketball team in Division I.
North Carolina is second and Stanford third in the women’s poll.
