The Greater Los Angeles affiliate of the American Heart Assn., in conjunction with the Baldwin Hills branch, is seeking the participation of churches and volunteers for its new blood pressure screening program.
The program, “Search Your Heart: Check Your Blood Pressure for Life,” will offer screenings, information and referrals at churches to help educate African Americans about high blood pressure.
One in three black Americans has high blood pressure, compared to one in four among the general population, she said. The new program is church-based “because that’s where the values and attitudes are shaped in a community,” said association spokeswoman Malaika Tawasufi.
The association is also seeking religious leaders, medical professionals and other people to volunteer their services for the program. A breakfast for local pastors and other religious leaders will be held Thursday to provide more information about the program.
