Nation IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Transit Walkout Spreads to Suburbs

Thousands of Philadelphia commuters made it to work by bicycle, taxi and train as a week-old transit strike against the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority spread to the suburbs. The 5,200 drivers and mechanics in Transport Workers Union Local 234 struck after demanding a 9% pay raise over three years. SEPTA has said it could afford no more than 7%. A smaller local of the same union joined the strike after after its 176 workers rejected SEPTA’s wage offer.
