In other second round matches, Gilbert Schaller of Austria defeated No. 4 Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2; Fabrice Santoro of France defeated No. 5 Alex Corretja of Spain, 6-3, 6-4; and unseeded Alberto Costa of Spain defeated No. 7 Slava Dosedel of the Czech Republic, 6-0, 6-1.
