Golden West College’s weekly student newspaper, the Western Sun, has been chosen the top community college paper in California by the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges.
The award was announced at the recent statewide conference of the association. The Golden West publication won first place in general excellence for the past year in the large-college, full-size newspaper division.
“This category includes schools with the largest and most prestigious journalism programs,” said Jim Tortolano, a Golden West College faculty member who serves as adviser for the Western Sun’s staff. “It’s a tribute to our students.”
The judging period for the competition was March, 1994, to this March. Student executive editors of the Western Sun during that period were Javier Davila of Santa Ana and Greg Newcomb and Paul Robinson, both of Westminster.
