EAST LOS ANGELES : Earth Day Cleanup Honors Cesar Chavez

More than 1,000 volunteers are expected to clean up East Los Angeles streets Saturday to commemorate Earth Day and honor the late migrant workers advocate Cesar E. Chavez.

The Los Angeles Conservation Corps and other community groups started the “Cesar E. Chavez Avenue Beautification Project: Es Nuestra Tierra” last year to plant trees, paint murals and pick up trash along the street named in honor of the former United Farm Workers of America leader.

This year’s effort will include planting 35 trees along Cesar E. Chavez Avenue between Atlantic Boulevard and Mednik Avenue and painting a mural at Robert Lane Elementary School.

The East Los Angeles cluster of Building Up Los Angeles, a project of the AmeriCorps national service program, will plant 35 trees in Boyle Heights, and volunteers from Southern California Edison and the Conservation Corps will be painting and doing maintenance work at East Los Angeles College.

“The project is the community’s way of educating the youth about Chavez’s accomplishments while celebrating Earth Day,” said Arturo Rodriguez, project coordinator for the Conservation Corps.

Volunteers will be treated to a community celebration after the work is done from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at East Los Angeles College, 1301 Cesar E. Chavez Ave.
