SAUGUS — Saturday night’s NASCAR SuperTrucks race turned out to be wild affair at Saugus Speedway.
Nine yellow flags and a red flag resulted in a 28-minute delay that marred the 200-lap event won by Ken Schrader in an AC Delco Chevrolet.
Ron Hornaday, a former Saugus regular, was involved in one of the most-serious mishaps on Lap 62 before finishing sixth.
Hornaday got tangled up with Kerry Teague going into the second turn. Hornaday got a flat tire and severe body damage to his RCCA Product Chevrolet. P.J. Jones passed and lost the rear end of his truck, which caught fire.
“We tore the truck up a little bit,” said Hornaday, who won last week at Tucson. “But fortunately we didn’t bend nothin’ but sheet metal.
“We had a good run tonight and we’re still looking good on the point standings.”
Turn 2 was also where former NFL coach Jerry Glanville collided with Mike Skinner. Skinner, who was leading on Lap 117, attempted to pass Glanville but spun out when the rear end of his truck was clipped.
“I was letting him go and thought he had passed when he dove down on me,” Glanville said. “It’s not good to rear-end the leader.”
Glanville added, “the smaller they are the closer they are,” in reference to the size of Saugus’ track, which is one-third of a mile.
Former Saugus driver Bill Sedgwick finished third behind Geoff Bodine.
“A lot of people here had never even see this track let alone race on it,” Sedgwick said. “These guys picked it up real quick.”
