CHATSWORTH — A teen-age driver died and two of his three passengers were in extremely critical condition Wednesday night after the youth lost control of his sports car and it smashed into a tree, authorities said.
Witnesses said the youth, who was not identified pending notification of his relatives, was speeding east in the 20200 block of Devonshire Street at 8:30 p.m. when he lost control of his car as he tried to pass a vehicle.
“He was going about 90 m.p.h. and as he tried to pass the car, he put on his brakes and started fishtailing,” said a witness, D. Banks, 22, of Northridge.
The two boys in the youth’s car were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center in extremely critical condition. The girl was taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in serious condition, said Capt. Allen Norman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
“The girl was the only one conscious when I ran up to the car,” Banks said. “She was screaming ‘Get me outta here!’ ”
“It was the scariest thing I have ever seen,” he said.
