LAPD Roll Calls
Ridiculous best describes the efficiency experts’ recommendation to eliminate Los Angeles Police Department roll calls (April 14).
Having retired from the LAPD after serving more than 25 years at various ranks and assignments and having been formally schooled in the science of administration, the importance of structured roll call sessions for patrol and traffic personnel is obvious to me.
Daily roll call training, which involves formal and informal presentations, is necessary to communicate information about ever-changing laws, policies, procedures and community concerns to the troops.
It is also the primary means for disseminating information (networking) about crime and wanted suspects. This is vital for officer and community safety. Much like a sports team meeting, where the coach trains and inspires, the roll call session provides police management the opportunity to train and develop esprit de corps that is so badly needed within LAPD.
