Bob Epstein; Host of Radio Jazz Show

Bob Epstein, 57, film archivist and devotee of traditional jazz who broadcast over Long Beach’s public radio station KLON in the 1980s and ‘90s. As a USC student he began programming film series and later moved to UCLA, where he began to lecture on film history in the late 1960s. With film professor Howard Suber, he founded the UCLA Film Archive and saved nearly all of Paramount’s 35-millimeter nitrate prints from destruction. He persuaded 20th Century Fox to donate its nitrate collection to UCLA. Epstein went to KLON in 1983 and continued to broadcast a weekly Sunday jazz show until his death. On April 8 in Hollywood of a heart attack.
